Grow more Flowers to your Vegetable Garden! 🥬🌸🌻🐝

When I first started growing vegetables I made the mistake of undervaluing the importance of flowers, but since I decided to make them a priority, I’ve noticed so many benefits. 😊🌸

Companion planting certain flowers alongside vegetables has helped to reduce pest issues, I plant nasturtiums to draw pests such as cabbage whites away from brassicas, and strong smelling varieties such as marigolds and sweet alyssum can help to mask the smell of other plants too. 🌺🐛

Many flowers also draw predatory insects into the garden and restore a more balanced ecosystem. Tansy and fennel are loved by ladybirds for example! 🌼🌱

Flowers also increase pollination and therefore crop yields, as they attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, wasps, and even birds into the garden. 🐝🐦‍⬛

If you struggle to get a good harvest from fruiting crops like aubergines and courgettes, then a lack of pollinators could be your problem.

And due to issues such as habitat loss and the widespread use of pesticides, pollinators need all the help they can get!

Many flower varieties are edible and medicinal, so they are healthy, taste great, and add colour to any plate.

A few of my favourites are nasturtiums, calendula, marigolds, borage and violas. 🌸🌼

Many flowers varieties are really easy to save seed from too, reducing costs and increasing resilience. And of course they also help lift your mood by adding so much beauty to any space! 🐞🐛

So let me know what flower varieties you’ll be adding to your garden this season? 😊🌼

Sow Sweet Peas now for Earlier Flowers! 🫛💐

Sweet peas are hardy, fragrant, produce attractive pollinators enticing flowers and are a great way to overcome those January blues when the spring garden feels oh so far away! 😔🌱

They can be sown from January to as late as May and I sow them successionally throughout, but it’s nice to have some earlier flowers around the gardens so I start sowing them started now. 😊👍🏻

Today I’m sowing the varieties ‘green fingers’ and ‘almost black’ which has an amazing scent.

Sweet pea seeds have a thick seed coat so I soak them overnight prior to planting to speed up germination, then sow seeds individually at a depth of around twice their size, and cover with compost.

I sow mine into deep cell seed trays, but it is often advised that they are sown in decomposable root trainers, or you could just use toilet roll tubes and plant out the whole thing to minimise root disturbance.

Water them well and place inside somewhere that has a nice level ambient temperature and as soon as they begin to emerge, move them to a sunny windowsill or a greenhouse or polytunnel if you have one. 🌱

Id then cover with fleece through the colder evenings if in a greenhouse or tunnel.

And When the plants are around 10cm tall, pinch out the growing point, which encourages bushier growth, and then just plant out after the last chance of a hard frost and give them something to climb like a bamboo structure.

Happy sowing and thanks for watching 😊🌱

Seeds to Sow in February 😊🌱🫘

After a long winter, It’s finally time to get back out into the green house and start sowing seeds again 😊🙌 some for early crops and some longer season varieties that need plenty of time to produce fruit!

So, here are the varieties I sow in February and how I sow them…

First it’s the heat loving plants, Chilli’s and Aubergine’s 🌶🍆

Here in the UK and similar climates they both take a long time to produce fruit, so it’s good to get them started off early, but they will need some form of heat and protection to germinate properly, a heat mat with grow lights would be ideal, but a propagation box on a sunny windowsill is a good budget friendly option.

The next is Lettuce 🥬

Many varieties are cold hardy so I start sowing mine around mid month to ensure I have a nice supply of early leaves. I sow them into seed trays and then plant some in the green house and some outside, but under the protection of a fleece cover, in case of a hard frost.

Then Onions 🧅

Most may grow them from sets, but they are easy to grow from seed. I multisow mine 4 seeds per module to maximise yields and plant them out together. I also find that onions sown from seed are less prone to bolting and they store much better too.

And Broad beans 🫘

If you haven’t overwintered your broad beans, now is a great time to sow them for a nice crops of pods in late spring to early summer, if you have limited space why not try field beans instead which are essential a more compact version.

This month I’ll also be sowing radish, peas, spinach and violas, so let me know what you’ll be sowing and for more tips and guides throughout the growing season, you can now join my free newsletter 😊🌱📧 there’s a link in my profile bio.
