Your CO₂ laser may be doing more than smoothing wrinkles and improving texture 👀

New research suggests that fractional CO₂ resurfacing may help repair some of the damage caused by years of sun exposure.

The best way to prevent skin cancer? Sunscreen. Every single day.

But if you’ve had a lot of sun exposure over the years, here’s something interesting you may not know: certain resurfacing lasers may do more than improve the appearance of sun damage. They may also help reduce the risk of future skin cancers in some high risk patients.

Studies have found that nonablative fractional laser treatments were associated with fewer new skin cancers in patients with a history of facial keratinocyte carcinoma.

In one study from Massachusetts General Hospital, patients who received even one nonablative fractional laser treatment were about half as likely to develop another skin cancer over the next six years.

Other research suggests repeated fractional CO₂ laser treatments may delay the development of squamous cell carcinoma.

Does this mean lasers replace sunscreen? No, sunscreen is still your first line of defense.

But it’s exciting to see that some treatments we use for sun spots, wrinkles, and skin texture may also have benefits beyond what we see on the surface.

More research is needed, but the future of laser treatments is very exciting!
